Killarney ( Irish: Cill Airne, meaning “church of sloes”) is a town in Co. Kerry in southwestern Ireland. The town is on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, which is part of Killarney National Park. The town is home to the magnificent Killarney National Park, St Mary’s Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross House and Abbey, Traditional Farms, the famous Lakes of Killarney, MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Purple Mountain, Mangerton Mountain, the Gap of Dunloe and Torc Waterfall. Killarney’s heritage, history and central position set on the Ring of Kerry make it one of the most popular tourist destination’s in Ireland..
Visitors have been travelling to Killarney for over 200 years to see its legendary beauty and it is easy to see why they came then and why they continue to come now. The location of our Killarney Holiday Homes just across from the world famous Lakes of Killarney & National Park means we are very lucky indeed to be situated in such a magnificent natural beauty spot. The landscape with the highest mountains of Ireland, the magnificent Killarney Lakes and gardens are breathtaking. Killarney’s National Park is home to Ireland’s only native herd of Red Deer. We were delighted this year to host the camera crew filming the latest documentary of the Red Deer in their natural habitat this autumn.
Fortunate enough to be within walking distance of the this beautiful park, you will enjoy spending time exploring the scenery, lakes, flora, fauna, wildllife, and animals that Killarney National Park is home too.
Killarney also has another side to it, some of the oldest copper mines were on the lake shore and date back to 2400 BC, and astonishingly copper has been mined there well into the late 19th Century a period of approximately four thousand years.
Killarney is still a flourishing tourism centre and we are located just over a mile from the centre of Killarney town, approx a 5 minute drive. Killarney is the ideal venue to stay a few days and explore the surrounding countryside. There are many daytrips, such as the breathtaking Dingle Peninsula, the world famous Ring of Kerry or the astonishing Beara Peninsula which are recommended from our central location base at Killarney Holiday Cottages in Killarney. Located in the immediate vicinity are Muckross House Gardens & Farms which form the centre part of the Killarney National Park which is also ideal for walking, jogging, cycling, horse riding or just relaxing.
Surrounding Area/Leisure: Due to the central locaton of our Self Catering holiday homes in Killarney, you can visit the many attractions on offer within minutes. For example, Muckross House, Traditional Farms, Ross Castle, The National Park are all about three minutes drive or cycle in five minutes with bicycle hire available next door to the homes. Visit the Gap of Dunloe which is about ten minutes away or take a drive to beautiful Kenmare which is about 25 minutes. Tour the Ring of Kerry , see the Blasket Islands and Dingle a bit further afield and explore the spectacular beauty of the Kerry region. Golf lovers will find Killarney has three of the best courses in the region about two miles from our home. The Irish Open has been held at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club for the past few years. There are over 20 courses in the region. Take the children swimming, tennis or pitch and putt next door at the Aquila Club only 500 yds away where our guests can use these facilities at discount rates. Visit the cinema or see a show all within five minutes.
Food and entertainment of the area: There is great entertainment on offer only yards away at the INEC which hosts many of Ireland’s most famous artists, entertainers and dancers including Riverdance. There are also many pubs nearby where traditional Irish music can be enjoyed. Great food is available both next door at The Oaks and in the local restaurants which surround the homes or in Killarney town which is only about a mile away. Guests of the holiday village can avail of discounts for breakfast and dinner at the Brehon and Lake hotels adjacent to our homes if you wish to enquire when booking. From pub grub to fine dining, Chinese or Italian- Killarney has a huge variety of really good restaurants to choose from . Night Clubs, Pubs and Cinema are all on offer in the town of Killarney.
Killarney is famous for its jaunting cars where you can view the National Park, Muckross House or Ross Castle in this novel means of transport. Killarney hosts many festivals during the year and is especially vibrant during the summer months and Christmas times where on street entertainment and markets take place. Horse racing in Killarney is certainly worth a visit too. For the active guests, The Star Outdoors Centre in Kenmare has much to offer with kayaking, canoeing, water sports of many descriptions and younger members will really enjoy a trip here. The beautiful Inch Beach is also only 30 minutes drive and is spectacular. We have been visiting Killarney for over 20 years and love it.
